Source For Shipwreck Coins?

My wife has been collecting shipwreck coins and some other shipwreck memorabilia (she's huge into treasure hunting what can I say). She really doesn't have anything that I would call "great" she has some grade 1 stuff, but that's about it. I'm trying to track down something very nice for her for our anniversary this year. My dollar limit is about $3500, but I've had a hell of a time finding anyone who sells much of anything. The only site I have found is this one http://www.newworldtreasures.com/ there are some nice coins there, however she has coins from the wrecks that they have decent coins from.

Any other suggestions? I basically plan on taking the coin, building a wood frame and typing up the background of the ship and wreck and placing the coin in the frame.

Thanks for any help!

Not sure if this will help, but when we were in Colorado we went into a coin and antique shop in Estes Park and they had an entire case of shipwreck coins of all different grades and prices from all over the world. The guy handed me a huge copper coin from a swedish shipwreck!
It was impressive, I had to try to focus on the CC Morgan silver dollars I went in there for.
Estes Park isn't that big and I would guess the store has a website.
Good Luck!

With all the boating accidents around here you'd think just going SCUBA diving would suffice!!

Try this, I Yahooed shipwreck coins and came up with this. There are a couple of nice sites here. I didn't check the pricing though.

Another thing you might try is to post on the Numismatic board here.

she'd probably like this book

"Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea"

it's about a successful mission to recover about a $billion worth of gold from a ship that went down about 1850 off the East Coast, 49er gold, it was a ship from SF.

Frankly - I collect many types of coins - and I find completely that SHIPWRECK means many 100s of percent higher prices. (read really expensive)

So I shop around for similar type coin years slabbed.

That's just me - however.

I recently picked up

44 B.C. Stater from Greece (Koson Thrace- Brutus falling on his sword - and these were his war chest coins for the mercinaries -controversy) MS63

441 - 450 A.D. Byzantine Theoosius II - Roman Constantinople - (to fight Attila and his HUNNIC army - from 442 A.D. ) MS62

Plus a few more like:

1750 Ducat - Netherlands - MS62 (Highest graded to date)

1753 A Paris - not Paris Hilton - Louie d'or - MS62

1786 I - 2 Louie d'or - MS62 right before he LOST his head around :36_3_12:1793 :thumpdown

Re: Source For Shipwreck Coins?

I agree with you historystudent, but she doesn't really buy them for the coin, she buys them because she wants to have items from the various shipwrecks, hell she wouldn't care if they were copper. She has a few other items, not just coins too.

Thanks GunDriller, I am thinking i may just buy that book to go with it!

If I wanted a CHEAPER shipwreck coins I'd search out the 1729 Dutch/Netherlands shipwreck.

I've seen the AU55 ish DUCATS go for around $750.00 ish.

I don't like the top of the front looks cheesy a tad. But really old almost 300 years back to the last time we had similar financial problems like the South Sea Bubble and the French John Law Stock JOBBER bubble.

Funny how things appear in cycles - this is the BIG 300:5_1_120::5_1_120: year one a "COMMIN'"

I'm sorry I like really weird things. I also picked up "darn it only" a AU58 1343 Venice Ducat from the last Doge burried in St. Marks ANDREA DANDOLO :tongue_ma: - in 1350 he was the DUKE (Doge) that saw 30% die in the Black Plague therein. Those deaths caused all the Venice Guilds Unions Labor formations because of the shortgage of labororers. Funny how that happens.

When Atilla came into Venice area for the battle he scared the heck out of the area and around Venice all the people ran into the SWAMPS - there they founded Venice in 443 AD. Funny how it all rhymes too.

His great Blind Great Uncle same name DANDOLO

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&e...o+doge&spell=1

sacked Constanoble in the previous Crusade and moved everything to Venice - got Venice to be the great financial power in the 1200s.

Check dealers metals dealers and antique shops located on the east coast of FLorida; particularly from Melbourne south to West Palm Beach?

Call local Chamber of Commerce. They should be able to give you the names/phone numbers of area businesses that may have ship-wreck coins for sale.

DYOD & BE VERY CAREFUL OF FAKES.

Re: Source For Shipwreck Coins?

Yea there was a sweet place up in St Augustine when I was up there last time, but i cant remember the name and they don't appear to have a website.

$750 is a little over my "ebay spending limit" lol I really don't like buying expensive items there, but I may have to take the risk if the need arrives.

Try GovMint.com. I like looking thru their older stuff and shipwreck items occasionally. Their prices are very high on fancy bullion type stuff though.
